DANCE1's Student Teacher Training Program that helps us create 'good humans'

DANCE1 is proud to be an Affiliate Partner Studio of Dance Studio Success' DanceStep Program.
In 2026 we invite DANCE1 students in Year 7 & above to apply for this exciting & respected Student Teacher Program.
The DanceStep Program is designed to support students who are ready to take the next step in their dance studio journey by becoming a leader. DanceSteppers are role models and provide support and care to the younger members of the DANCE1 studio. Most importantly, this relationship fosters a sense of community & family amongst our students which is something we strongly value at DANCE1.
What is the DanceStep Program?
The DanceStep Program is a structured Student Teacher education program created by Jane Grech, respected industry leader & Founder of ‘Dance Studio Success'. The Program is a 6 Level progressive training which supports students as they grow personally and professionally. Throughout the program,
students develop essential assistant teaching skills including:
-
Behaviour management
-
Understanding learning styles
-
Anatomy and safe dance principles
-
Communication and leadership
-
Planning and classroom awareness
Why DanceStep?
The DanceStep Program is not just about learning to assist in a dance class - it’s about preparing students for life beyond the studio.
All skills learnt are transferable to all career paths (not just positions in dance education). There is a strong focus on building confidence, empathy, communication and leadership which can be seen in all areas of life both in and out of the classroom.
When all DanceStep modules are completed, they contribute as Recognition of Prior Learning towards a formal Certificate III qualification which can be undertaken through a RTO recommended by DANCE1.
DanceStep can also be used as supporting evidence for Duke of Edinburgh Awards, school community service hours and CVs and leadership portfolios.
What is involved in the DanceStep Program?
The DanceStep Program has three components:
1. Theory
Each DanceStep student will work through a Theory Workbook tailored to the learning needs & age of students. Students will attend two compulsory Coaching Days where the Level theory is discussed together as a group, whilst also participating in some practical exercises with other DanceStep students.
Subjects include Anatomy, Safe Dance Principles, Self-Leadership, Planning for Performances, Behaviour
Management, Teaching Strategies, Learning Styles and Communication.
Attendance at BOTH Coaching Days is required to complete the year's level, so please make note of the following dates for the upcoming year:
* Friday 13th March 2026, 4.30 - 7.30pm @ LUC Hall (Week 6, Term 1)
* Friday 4th September 2026, 4.30 - 7.30pm @ LUC Hall (Week 7, Term 3)
Students will also receive online access to additional videos & information whilst working through their Level.
2. Practical Assisting
Each DanceStep student is allocated a Junior class (Preschool - Year 6) to assist with, allowing them to apply their learning in a real classroom environment.
A minimum of 40 practical hours (Levels 1-4) and 50 practical hours (Levels 5 & 6) are needed to complete each Level. These hours are usually gained over one dance year, ensuring student teachers have time to grow and implement their skills effectively. Student Teachers are offered additional opportunities
to gain additional hours such as Medal Day, Holiday Camps & Movie Nights.
We ask that participants consider their availability carefully as DanceStep is a year long commitment & once allocated a class, changing classes cannot always be accommodated.
3. C.B.A.A. Examinations
DanceStep students are required to complete a formal dance examination (in DANCE1's case, the C.B.A.A. Jazz Examination) to qualify for their 2026 DanceStep Level. This is to ensure that assistants remain on top of their technique & training to safely assist with their class & Master Teacher.
Cost of the DanceStep Program
The cost of the DanceStep Program is $335 per level. Students usually progress through one Level per year.
The cost per Level covers the following:
* Hard-copy Level Workbook
* Access to online trainings and additional theory via the DanceStep portal
* DanceStep Assistant Teacher Uniform & Welcome Pack
* Two Coaching Workshops - attendance is compulsory with dates set as above.
PLEASE NOTE: Compulsory participation in the C.B.A.A. Jazz Examination is NOT included in the Level fee & will be invoiced separately.
We think DanceStep Founder, Jane Grech highlights the aim of the DanceStep Program best through the DanceStep vision:
Growing Leaders
Empowering Students
'Students learn to be part of a team and a community, to be resilient and tenacious, to enjoy the rewards of delayed gratification and many other important life skills.
For many, the dance studio becomes a second home where students feel safe, nurtured and encouraged to reach their full potential in all aspects of life. '
What is expected of a DanceStep participant?
DANCE1 students enrolled in the DanceStep Program will be expected to:
-
Complete a Level Application Form - Each year we ask students to reflect on why they want to be involved & what they hope to get out of the Program.
-
Weekly attendance at ONE Junior Level class to gain hands-on, practical teaching in an Assistant Teacher role. Assistants must be present for the entire time of their class for those hours to be signed-off.
-
Participation in the C.B.A.A. Jazz Examination (held in Term 2, at an additional cost). This is to ensure that student teachers are on top of their own dance education.
-
Attendance at TWO coaching days as noted above for the FULL duration.
-
Uphold the values of DANCE1 and act with responsibility whilst representing the Studio
-
Wear full DANCE1 uniform with correct shoes & hair to ALL classes (Junior class and the student teacher’s own dance classes).
-
Behave in a mature & sensible manner whilst in their Assistant Teacher role, being a role model at all times.
-
Have clear communication with their Mentor Teacher, Miss Kirsty & Miss Luisa to indicate any absences due to illness, unexpected delays with public transport etc.

DanceStep Applications open in January each year via the DANCE1 Office. Each student will submit an application which will be considered via the DANCE1 Admin Team.
