Taking a break from dance can be refreshing, but it also comes with its challenges. Stepping away from the studio can sometimes feel like a setback. We've all felt it - you’ve finally nailed your triple pirouette… Suddenly classes are over for the year and it feels deflating to think you have to wait the whole summer holidays to get back into class.

However, it’s entirely possible to stay motivated, maintain your skills, and even reignite your passion for dance during the holidays. Here are some tips to keep you inspired and ready to hit the dance floor when you return.

1. Set Clear Goals

Even during a break, having goals gives you something to work toward. These don’t have to be grand or overwhelming—simple milestones like improving flexibility, perfecting a specific move, or doing push ups every day (but not sure anyone is going to make that their goal 🤣.

Write your goals down and track your progress to stay motivated.

2. Stay Active

Dance is a physical art form, so staying active is essential. Find ways to add in some extra movement - going for an early morning walk, some gentle stretching or swimming. By continuing to move your body you will prevent injuries when you return to dance.

3. Keep Learning

Even if you’re not physically dancing, you can still continue to grow and learn. Listen to the music you love to dance to, watch a musical (we’ve all seen Wicked, right?!) and watch videos of new skills you want to achieve. This deepens your appreciation for what you do and may inspire new ideas.

4. Take Care of Your Body and Mind

We’re aiming to find the balance between working hard and slowing down. Rest is part of growth, so don’t forget to allow your body to recover. Eat nutritious meals, stay hydrated - a healthy body and mind are essential for any dancer, especially a D1 dancer!

5. Set a Schedule

Even on a break, having a routine can keep you grounded. Dedicate time each week for movement or dance-related activities. Knowing you have time carved out for movement, exercise, and stretching can help you stay consistent.

6. Celebrate Small Wins

During a break, progress can feel slower, but every small step counts. Celebrate improvements, no matter how subtle, and reward yourself for sticking to your goals.

7. Visualise Your Return

Imagine yourself back in class, performing with confidence and energy. Visualisation is a powerful tool that helps keep your dreams alive and reminds you why you love to dance.

Taking a break doesn’t mean completely putting your passion on hold. With a little creativity and dedication, you can stay motivated, keep your skills sharp, and even come back stronger. Remember, every dancer needs moments of pause to refuel their spirit—embrace the break and use it as an opportunity to grow in new ways.
